September is Cervical Screening Awareness Month in Aotearoa New Zealand, a crucial reminder that early detection through cervical screening can prevent cervical cancer and save lives.

At Physio Unlimited, we stand with wāhine across the country to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and empower more people to take this important step for their health and future.

Why Cervical Screening Is So Important

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer when detected early. Every year, about 160 people in New Zealand are diagnosed with cervical cancer—but regular HPV cervical screening can identify changes in the cervix long before cancer develops.

In July 2023, New Zealand introduced a new, more accurate HPV screening test that checks for the human papillomavirus (HPV) the virus responsible for the majority of cervical cancers. The test is:

  • More accurate than the old smear test
  • Needed only once every 5 years (for most people)
  • Available as a self-test, offering greater comfort, privacy, and control

Who Needs Cervical Screening in New Zealand?

According to the National Cervical Screening Programme (NCSP):

  • If you’re aged 25 to 69 and have a cervix, you should be screened every 5 years
  • If you are immunocompromised, screening is recommended every 3 years
  • Start screening at age 25, or when you become sexually active—whichever comes first
  • Screening is still essential, even if you’ve had the HPV vaccine
  • Free cervical screening is available for many, including Māori, Pacific peoples, and those eligible for public healthcare

The Self-Test Option: Comfort, Privacy, and Empowerment

The new self-test option is a game-changer. You can now choose to take your own vaginal swab in a private setting at your clinic. It’s:

  • Safe
  • Simple
  • As accurate as a clinician-taken test

Whether you prefer a clinician-assisted test or self-testing, what matters most is getting screened.

Let’s Break the Stigma Around Cervical Screening

We understand that for some, cervical screening can feel uncomfortable, stressful, or triggering. At Physio Unlimited, we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and mana-enhancing space for everyone.

Our team is here to listen, support, and walk with you on your health journey respecting your experience every step of the way.
