World Stroke Day - 29th October
Every Minute Counts – How You Can Be a Stroke Spotter
October 29 is World Stroke Day a moment when the global community unites to drive awareness, prevention, and action around strokes. In 2025, the World Stroke Organization (WSO) is spotlighting a crucial message: “Know the signs of stroke and be ready to #ActFAST.”
Because when it comes to strokes, time lost truly is brain lost.

Why World Stroke Day Matters
- Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide.
- Globally, 1 in 4 people over age 25 will experience a stroke in their lifetime.
- Yet, many people don’t know the warning signs or how to respond, which delays life‑saving care.
The WSO’s 2025 campaign builds on its “Every Minute Counts” advocacy, urging people to recognise symptoms early and act fast.
Recognising a Stroke: #ActFAST
One of the strongest messages this year is the F.A.S.T. mnemonic for stroke symptoms:
- F = Face drooping
- A = Arm weakness
- S = Speech difficulties / slurred speech
- T = Time to call emergency services
If you see one or more of these signs, act immediately, call for emergency help.
Because treatment is time-sensitive, the sooner intervention begins, the greater the chance of limiting brain damage and improving recovery.
Prevention: What You Can Control
While strokes can strike suddenly, many of their risk factors are manageable. Some powerful prevention actions include:
- Monitoring and managing blood pressure
- Controlling diabetes, cholesterol, and atrial fibrillation
- Maintaining a heart‑healthy diet
- Regular physical activity
- Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol use
- Managing stress, seeking mental health support
On the WSO site you’ll find prevention resources and toolkits to help communities reduce risk.
Life After Stroke: Support & Recovery
Surviving a stroke is often only the beginning of a journey. Recovery, rehabilitation, and support are vital:
- Many survivors need physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy
- Emotional and psychological support is critical
- Social reintegration, adaptation, and rebuilding independence require community and health system backing
- Stroke survivors and caregivers bring powerful voices to raise awareness about needs and rights
WSO works closely with survivors globally to highlight those stories and realities.
How You Can Take Part in 2025
Here are a few ideas to join in and push the impact further:
- Use the WSO Toolkit: download posters, social media assets, key messages, GIFs, infographics.
- Share stroke survivor stories: local interviews, personal reflections show how recognising early made a difference.
- Light up a landmark: show support publicly, generate conversation.
- Play & promote the interactive quiz / game: the new Strokespotter.org tool will help communities learn to spot signs.
- Sign & promote the Global Stroke Action Letter: push for government commitments under #StrokeActionNow.
- Register your local events: big or small, every action helps.
Let’s turn awareness into action!
